The story of the bison is the true story of the American West.

The comeback of the bison from near extinction in 1900 to over 300,000 animals today has been a testament to the foresight of a few dedicated individuals and the efforts of hundreds of private ranches and public herds. After millions of years of evolution, once again the bison's great strengths are beginning to be recognized:

  • Their perfect adaptation to their environment
  • The low fat and low cholesterol qualities of the meat
  • The great durability of the leather
  • Their hardiness to withstand extremes in climate
  • The National Buffalo Foundation was founded in 1995 at the time of the merger of the National and American Bison Associations
  • The National Buffalo Foundation has been formed to help insure the future for this magnificent animal and to help continue its remarkable recovery in the 21at century
