Sen. Enzi Honored for Support of Bison Producers
01/25/2010
Denver, CO (January 25, 2010) – The National Bison Association honored U.S. Sen. Michael Enzi, R-WY, as a “Friend of the Buffalo,” during the association’s annual conference banquet Friday evening in recognition of the Senator’s leadership on policies important to North American bison producers.
In presenting Enzi with the award, National Bison Association President John Flocchini noted that the Wyoming Senator has been a consistent champion of bison in Washington, D.C.
Last year, Sen. Enzi successfully worked with his colleagues to assure that food safety legislation being drafted in Congress did not subject bison to federal oversight exceeding the levels for other commodities.
“Senator Enzi and his staff worked closely with us to develop language that would put bison producers and processors on an even keel with the other ‘mainstream’ livestock commodities. The Senator worked with his colleagues on both sides of the aisle in committee, and now, the bill headed to the floor for debate in the next few weeks contains the National Bison Association language,” Flocchini said.
In 2004, the Wyoming Senator was instrumental in securing authorization for the U.S. Mint to issue a new limited-edition buffalo nickel to commemorate the bicentennial of the famous Lewis and Clark Voyage of Discovery.
The Friend of the Buffalo award is the National Bison Association’s top honor for leaders in the public policy arena, and is reserved for officials who demonstrate “their love for the buffalo, and their commitment on behalf of the people who raise them,” Flocchini noted during the presentation.
Nearly 300 bison producers, processors and marketers were on hand for the presentation ceremony at the association’s annual winter banquet in Denver.
