Association Promotes Bison Advantage at FFA Convention

10/29/2009

Indianapolis, IN (October 29, 2009) -- Emerging opportunities in buffalo ranching and marketing attracted significant interest from among the nearly 60,000 students, advisors and adults attending the National FFA convention here last week.

Representatives of the National Bison Association hosted a booth at the three day convention, and were swamped with students and adults seeking specific information regarding bison husbandry, nutrition, fencing and marketing.

“The interest in being a part of the bison business is extremely high, and reflects the fact that bison production and marketing is emerging as a stable, sustainable and profitable enterprise,” said NBA Executive Director Dave Carter. Carter, along with representatives of two Indiana bison ranches, staffed the association’s booth during the three-day conference, and met with a steady stream of students, advisors and adults who were seeking information about being a part of the business.

“Several people at the convention actively sought out the National Bison Association’s booth to gather information they can use in making a decision about transitioning into bison production,” Carter said.

The National Bison Association has initiated an active campaign to attract new producers to help meet the rising demand for bison meat. Sales of bison meat have grown steadily over the past five years, and the prices ranchers are receiving for market animals have hovered at an all-time high during the past year. The association will soon release an all-new Bison Producers’ Handbook, with chapters covering all elements of production, processing and marketing of bison. Further, the National Bison Association website at www.bisoncentral.com contains information targeted to new and prospective producers.
